Rationale: My first graders learn about birds all year long: our state bird, penguins, bird migration, winter birds. This quick pick collection of newer bird counting books and problem solving books add to the resources for those lessons. Additionally, My Books Alive has several complete lessons about birds at Little Bird, and What do Bluebirds Do?

Dewey: 513.5; Int Lvl: K-3; Rd Lvl: 1.7 A rhyming nonfiction picture book that explores the numerical sets--one tail, two paws, four legs, etc.--that occur throughout the natural world.



The chicken problem by Oxley, Jennifer  — Random House, 2012. Dewey: 513.2; Int Lvl: K-3; Rd Lvl: 2.6. When someone leaves the chicken coop open and 100 chickens escape, Peg and Cat use their arithmetic skills to solve the problem.
