Rationale: The Inspiration Book for this Books Alive entry reminded me of an earlier Inspiration Book (About hummingbirds : a guide for children by Cathryn Sill, Peachtree, 2011) that serves as a vehicle to share a citizen scientist website that I use in the library and share with every teacher. It is that earlier book about hummingbirds on which this Books Alive entry is based. Since Woodpeckers : a Guide for Children by Cathryn P. Sill triggered my memory, I do include a short woodpecker bibliography at the end of the entry.
The site is Hummingbirds--Journey North--Tracking Migrations and Seasons (https://journeynorth.org/hummingbirds ) and features the effects of the seasons on plants and animals and allows students to track the changing seasons as well as animal migration and plant development. There are about a dozen different strands in the site: monarch butterflies, hummingbirds, tulip gardens, American robins, gray whales, whooping cranes, bald eagles, sunlight & the seasons, weather and songbird migration, sunlight & mystery class, weather and climate. There are a multitude of less extensive lessons that study earthworms, frogs, ice-out, leaf-out, maple sugar, orioles, red-winged blackbirds, barn swallows, loons plus archived studies of caribou and manatees, but our emphasis is the hummingbird.
I use the site for different emphases in each of our grade level groupings. In Grades K-3, we learn hummingbird basics such as identification, nesting and babies and food. Birds of all types are a major study in those grades. In Grades 3-6 we study hummingbird conservation. In Grades 5-8 we study hummingbird migration. Specific resources for each grade level are included at the grade level section.
AND many of the lessons and teaching resources and ideas are at our fingertips at Hummingbird Journey North and the following websites. Use the ideas freely--I couldn’t develop better lessons.
