Rationale: Women have achieved many firsts in history, but these Inspiration Books are not about political firsts, scientific firsts, literary firsts, but about women daredevils within and without the circus arena. Today we’d say they participated in x-treme sports or x-treme activities for a woman.
Circuses don’t come to small town America as often as they did 75-120 years ago. Instead children see daredevil type events on TV--x-treme sports, rodeo events, even all the sports channel programming. They are almost everyday viewing, but in earlier days boys and girls were thrilled, were chilled, and covered their eyes in fear of the danger, especially if there were spills. To acquaint young children with the thrills of circus acts, the emphasis of the grades K-3 story hour will be circus books, the students in grades 4-8 will learn more about some of the unusual women daredevils.

Introduction: What is a daredevil? (Allow time for comments, but don’t give an answer.)
Read aloud the story of one of the daredevils in Women Daredevils. The first daredevil woman mentioned in the book was a human cannonball.
Then read the titles of each chapter to give students an idea of the variety of x-treme sports. Recently another anthology of daring women was published, Women Who Dared. (Skim the contents with the students and show a few of the two page spreads, one of picture and one of text.) Not everybody in Women Who Dared was involved in sports but they were still daring. How?
Julie Cummins and Linda Skeers did a lot of research for their books. We’re going to learn a little more about some of the women in the books and some others who were first in their field or worked in an occupation women often didn’t. We will use Wikipedia and Google for our information search. Use Wikipedia first.

I’m going to model how we’re going to do our research notes based on another Inspiration Book. The woman in our next Inspiration Book is a daredevil. She was called Queen of the Falls, Niagara Falls, that is. Where is Niagara Falls? Part of it is in the U.S., part in Canada.
Read aloud: Queen of the Falls by Van Allsburg, Chris - Houghton Mifflin Books for Children, p 2011, c2011 --971.33--Int Lvl: K-3--Rd Lvl: 4.0. Recounts the stunt performed by sixty-two-year-old retired charm school instructor Annie Edson Taylor, who went over Niagara Falls in a wooden barrel in an effort to gain fame and fortune.
On the note sheet there are seven boxes: who, what, where, when, why, how and source. Based on what we read, let’s fill in as many squares as possible. (Help students answer and write notes in each square. Write simple bibliographic information in the source square.)
We couldn’t find all the answers in the Inspiration Book so now, we’re going to do some simple research--the who, what, where, when, how, why, and source kind by using an online encyclopedia, Wikipedia. Demonstrate locating Wikipedia and skimming to find any needed additional information.Collect your notes on the note sheet. (Save discussion about Wikipedia’s weaknesses for another lesson.) If you didn’t find all the information you needed in Wikipedia, do a Google search using the woman’s name followed by the word biography.
Then using the information, decide what letters of the alphabet your person or event could represent. Within your class we will need all 26 letters represented. For many of you the last name of the person could be the letter, or the career, or the location of person’s birth, etc. Once your teacher or the librarian has approved your letter, you need to write a paragraph emphasizing that letter based on your research.
For the final portion of the project we’re going to make an ABC class book about events in women’s history. The title of your page will be ____ is for ____. Use 36 font, and Times New Roman font and landscape. Choose a color for the letter and what it is for. Then go back to black 12 point for your paragraph. Insert a picture representing your research--it could be a photo or drawing of the person, place or thing--be creative. At the bottom of the page in 10 point add your sources. Have the teacher or librarian check and approve your work and give you permission to print.
Design a cover or title page for the class book. Remember all the parts of each. Your teacher will select the best one and that will become the booklet cover.
