Little Mouse's Big Book of Fears by Emily Gravett. 2008

Am I a Scaredy Cat?

Inspiration Book:
Little Mouse's big book of fears by Gravett, Emily - Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, p2008, c2008--E--Int Lvl: K-3--Rd Lvl: 3.7 Little Mouse draws pictures of some of the many things of which he is afraid, including creepy crawlies, sharp knives, and having accidents, and provides the correct scientific name for each of his fears.

Rationale: Fear comes in many forms, many of which are mentioned in the Inspiration Book using the correct medical term. In the bibliography you will find books listed by fear. When you have a group or child with a phobia, use one of the books mentioned for that fear. Use the books as a sort of bibliotherapy when appropriate.  Two delightful series characters who have a number of phobias are Alvin Ho and Julia Gillan. For Grades K-3 there is a story hour using the a character in a book series, Scaredy Squirrel.

Halloween is also a good time to include scary things. Of course, you can do the opposite and try books about courage. Also explore the sleeping problems entries.

Grades 3-8--I’m Scared Silly
Background: Kids have lots of fears about many things, and some of them seem to be ridiculous fears from an adult point of view. Well, maybe some of our adult fears are also ridiculous. Use this lesson based on the Inspiration Book for health classes 3-8. Students will learn about the many kinds of fears found in the Inspiration Book and dig deeper into one of these fears by exploring other picture books. Then they will make a page similar to Emily Gravett’s pages to introduce their book or tell about the fear they have been assigned.

Preparation: Gather as many books about the fears found in Gravett’s book as possible from your library and an assortment of interlibrary loans and group them by fear.

Write each fear’s medical term and the translation on sentence strips to label each group of books.

5 x 8 index cards for notes and sketching. Write a fear on as many cards as there are students.

Make a copy of the Inspiration Book page representing each fear.

Introduction: Read aloud the medical terms for the assorted fears. What were those words? Well, they are medical terms for fears or phobias that people have. In our Inspiration Book, Little Mouse has lots of fears. If any of these fears are so strong that people cannot function, the people may need to be treated medically. And, that’s why this library session is a health lesson.

Read aloud:
Little Mouse's big book of fears by Gravett, Emily - Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, p2008, c2008--E--Int Lvl: K-3--Rd Lvl: 3.7 Little Mouse draws pictures of some of the many things of which he is afraid, including creepy crawlies, sharp knives, and having accidents, and provides the correct scientific name for each of his fears.

I’ve made a collection of picture books that represent Little Mouse’s fears. You may work by yourself or with a partner. Randomly I will hand you a card identifying one fear. Find the book collection, read as many books as possible, then made a page similar to those in Little Mouse’s Big Book of Fears that continues to clarify the fear. We’ll post the completed pages in the health classroom.
