Back to Front and Upside Down by Claire Alexander. 2012

I Don't Learn Like You Do
Back to front and upside down by Alexander, Claire — Eerdmans Books for Young Readers, 2012--E-; Int Lvl: K-3; Rd Lvl: 2.2 While the rest of the class makes birthday cards for the principal, Stanley struggles with his words and letters.

Rationale: Disabilities come in many forms: physical, mental, emotional. The modern teacher and librarian need to know a bit about what they are, how to teach a child with a disability, and how to help other students understand and relate to the person with disabilities. My small private school welcomes students with disabilities with open arms and compassion. To help the teachers, I prepare lists of books, websites, and teacher background materials. This Books Alive entry is that type of resource, a bibliography, a book trailer, and teacher background material about dyslexia. I may make this same material available to parents who indicate a need or interest.

When I have a student with disabilities in the middle school grades, the language arts teacher and I may team teach an awareness unit using a variety of literature about a wide variety of disabilities. That, however, is not the purpose of this entry.

I also may include a book about a person with a disability in a primary grade story hour to awaken awareness, but I would not do an entire story hour about one disability or disabilities in general. That’s too heavy-handed and pedantic.
