Lucky Ducklings by Eva Moore. 2013

You’re a Lucky Ducky
Lucky ducklings by Moore, Eva — Orchard Books, an imprint of Scholastic Inc., 2013--E-; Int Lvl: K-3; Rd Lvl: 2.1 This rescue happened in June of 2000 in the town of Montauk, New York, on the end of Long Island. The people who helped the lucky ducklings are Joe Lenahan, Paul Greenwood, Dennis Sisco, and Perry Aaland."--Title page verso. While following their mother through town, five little ducklings fall into a storm drain.

Rationale: You have probably read and reread Make Way for Ducklings every year. Well, Lucky Ducklings has a similar twist. Read both and do a group comparison. I do duck and duckling stories in the springtime when I often do a series of baby animal story hours. My first grade teacher hatches chickens just before spring break each year, and all the chicken and duck stories fit. Usually I do ducks in kindergarten and chickens with first grade, just to help me keep my plans less repetitive. Another twist to these springtime story hours is one fiction hour and one nonfiction hour followed by a discussion at the end of each hour about the characteristics of the stories represented. If you can handle one more duck or chicken story hour, do a third in which you combine fiction and nonfiction and help the students identify which book(s) fit which category.

You could also add talking about the difference in call numbers for fiction, nonfiction, and easy picture books and follow-up with a short Game of Call Numbers. Simply use the spine labels from the books you’ve gathered or make flash cards. Divide the group into teams and have a representative from each team try to call out the type of number before the other teams. Rotate relay style. No need to keep score, just have fun.

A blog worth following is Abby the Librarian. At the link below she has a whole ducky storytime. Her blog is filled with ideas, personal thoughts, philosophy. Basically, a good fun read.
