10 Inventors Who Changed the World by Clive Gifford. 2009,

Invention Connections

Inspiration Book:

10 inventors who changed the world by Gifford, Clive - Kingfisher, p2009, c2009--609--Int Lvl: 5-8--Rd Lvl: 5.9 Profiles the lives and work of inventors who changed the course of history, including Archimedes, Galileo, Benjamin Franklin, James Watt, Thomas Edison, and others.
Life Links: Archimedes, Galileo Galilei, Benjamin Franklin, James Watt, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla, Marie Curie, Glenn Curtiss, Sergei Korolev
Others: Al-Jazari, Joseph Montgolfier, Alessandro Volta, Clarence Birdseye, Douglas Engelbart

Rationale: PBS carried a series about civilization and inventions titled “Connections.” On it the host started with a common item or invention and took the audience through history showing how that common item was changed and it changed the world. The Inspiration Book makes similar connections. Each of the inventors is connected to the previous inventor in some way; they built on each other. If this were not a Quick Pick entry, but a full Books Alive entry, it is that interconnectedness that I would emphasize. The now OP LibrarySparks had three issues that featured inventions and inventor. Just in case you saved them like I did, I’ve listed them below in the Teacher Resource section.

The third grade social studies curriculum at my school is presented as representative biographies, and Thomas Edison is the representative for the Industrial Revolution, then in fourth grade, the concepts of light and electricity are studied in science.

The inventors represented in 10 Inventors are listed in the bibliographic entry as an extra note in the bibliographic entry above. These inventors could easily form the basis of biographical research for Grades 5-8. I’ve chosen to list titles that are more general, including books and resources that cover the broad range of inventions and inventors rather than individuals.

A middle school librarian friend coordinates an invention research project with her social studies teachers that culminates in a library filled with tri-fold displays about common everyday inventions.

Elsewhere in Books Alive, you will find specific lessons about inventors like Galileo, Franklin, Edison, the Day-Glo brothers, and Farnsworth. Someday, I might gather all those resources into an expanded unit.
