Cluck, Cluck…
Inspiration Book: (Quick Pick, Nonfiction Detective)
City chickens by Heppermann, Christine  — Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2012--636.5; Int Lvl: 3-6; Rd Lvl: 6.5 In Minneapolis, the Chicken Run Rescue cares for chickens that are found wandering the city streets.

Rationale: There are numerous books, fiction and folklore books about chickens for the Grades 3-6 group, but I wanted nonfiction books that were quality books--facts presented in an interesting manner. Most representative nonfiction chicken books are formulaic series titles or books for younger readers. A comb, wattle, and beak are three characteristics that describe a chicken. Drive the rest of the school nutty by using a plastic cup and string to create a pretend chicken that mimics a real squawking sound. Of course, do the Chicken Dance when you introduce the theme.

The Chicken Run Rescue in Minneapolis is unique, and I found no similar quality titles about poultry--there are many about dogs, cats, and other mammals. Consequently the Related Titles list is short. I did add a few newer fiction titles for fun and titles for Grades K-3 to provide additional content. When would I recommend or display these titles?--when the first grade is hatching chickens and the older students want more information... in the springtime as part of a larger display about fowl and spring hatching... and as part of a larger display of farm animal titles.
