Our World Of Water : Children and Water Around the World by Beatrice Hollyer. (Updated 2020)

A Watery World
Inspiration Book:
Our world of water : children and water around the world by Hollyer, Beatrice - Holt, p2009, c2008--363.6--Int Lvl: K-3--Rd Lvl: 4.6. Explains how vital water is to human survival, and examines where water comes from, along with the ways children in Peru, Mauritania, the United States, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Tajikistan use this natural resource. The life-sustaining importance of water is described through narratives and photographs of children from six different countries. Glossary.

Rationale: Most of the My Books Alive blog  contain posts with actual library lesson plans. In my mind, most only means more than half so every other type of posting falls in the less than half category. It’s sort of a miscellaneous category because in those miscellaneous blogs you may find booklists, resource lists, a germ of an idea for using a book, computer activities, and library media philosophy for starters.

This blog posting is a book and computer resource list divided into three grade levels. I have found when I prepare such a resource list that I need to frequently keep it up to date. When this particular list was initially prepared seven years ago it looked very different--new titles have been added and many deleted. I also check each computer address because they go in and out very quickly. No new computer resources were added.

My primary teachers include water lessons as part of the study of matter and use water as the sample for the three states of matter. Primary students also study the water cycle when studying weather. Another teacher of older students includes a study of water when studying salt water and the oceans and fresh water and rivers and lakes. Still another discusses the necessity of water when teaching about weather extremes and the lack and excess of water. Thus, a topic that students often take for granted becomes a significant element in another topic and is repeated in a spiraling and sequential fashion. The oldest students include the study of water pollution in their unit on resources conservation.

All of the books and suggested resources are meant to supplement the work being done in the classroom. On a regular basis (usually weekly), I distribute help request checklists. I have used different formats of the checklist, always trying to make the process easier and less time consuming for the teacher because I know how busy they are and I believe one of the roles of the school library is to provide resources for classroom use.  I try to provide a wide variety in both the area of readability and potential breadth of the topic.

Some teachers look for resources regularly; others need to be encouraged. When I do a new materials bibliography, I highlight items a teacher should be aware of. Some will add those specific items to their request list the next time the topic is taught. For those who need encouragement to use new materials, I have the item(s) hand delivered. To help me when purchasing materials, I file the request forms by date, and know my timeline and topics for purchasing. I use teacher requests for locating online resources, too,

Sometimes I gather all the materials, check them out to the teacher, talk about them during a class visit to the library, then have the students assist me and the teacher with delivery. Sometimes I do one of the suggested activities or show one of the online resources to the students. You could also do one of the science experiments with the class to motivate both the children who will then encourage the teacher.

Even though the Inspiration Book is listed as K-3 interest, be sure to include it with the 5-8 book collection.
