Rationale: My Books Alive covers many topics in many ways--lesson plans, philosophy, memories, hints, tips, and introductions to new ideas and/or activities or simply introductions. This week, I’m simply introducing a relatively new book prize, the Mathical Book Prize, and limiting the related resources to titles for the very youngest. Since the prize has been in existence only a short time, the list isn’t long and I’ve included a few “teaching” resources for several of the books. Honor Awards and Hall of Fame Awards are also presented. I simply listed those titles at the end of this entry. If you have preschool or four year old kindergarten classes, consider having these titles available.
The royal awards for children’s literature have been around since 1922 for the Newbery Award, and 1938 for the Caldecott Award. In 2015, the first Mathical Book Prize was awarded. The Mathical Book Prize recognizes outstanding youth trade fiction and nonfiction selected to inspire a love of math in the world around us. The Award is presented annually, and 80 titles have received the prize thus far. Prize-winning books span grades PreK through 12 and feature novels, biographies, chapter books and picture books. They have been selected every year since 2015 by a committee of math teachers, reading teachers, mathematicians, librarians, early childhood experts, and others.
With support from the Firedoll Foundation and the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, the Mathical Book Prize is presented by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) in partnership with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and in coordination with the Children’s Book Council (CBC).
