Rationale: I’m always on the lookout for new books that celebrate the importance of libraries and the power of books and reading. And in one year there were two that tell a good compelling story. That Book Woman fits nicely with Biblioburro and Miss Dorothy. The three books take a look at non-traditional libraries, namely traveling libraries which many students aren’t familiar with. It also gives me a chance to tell a life story about the county bookmobile that served my elementary school. My county still operates a bookmobile. During the summer months it makes stops at some of our rural schools. Even when one of our city school libraries was being extensively remodeled, the bookmobile provided book service. If I want to extend the traveling library concept to the upper grades, I add My Librarian is a Camel.
For the beginning of the year, I’ve developed an orientation literature pattern: the first week, I do “first day of school and/or library,” the second week “reading and book power,” and the third week, “library and librarian power,” and this collection of books fits the librarian power week. Of course I add the older title Library Lil. Since the methodology and skill content is similar for each primary grade: rules and behavior, book care, book location, I like to change the books I share. Consequently, I’m always looking for new books to add to the repertoire so as not to repeat titles each year. I also have a general rule of thumb (very general and meant to be readily broken) for determining which book(s) go with which grade. The general rule is that kids can handle read aloud reading level double their grade. A book that has a reading level of 3.5 is fine for late first and any second grade. Of course, I do easier books with older students daily.
