Saskatchewan, Land of the Living Skies
Tumbleweed skies by Sherrard, Valerie - Fitzhenry & Whiteside, p2010, c2010 --Fic--Int Lvl: 3-6--Rd Lvl: 4.8 Ellie must stay at her grandmother's farm in Saskatchewan when her father takes a temporary job as a traveling salesman, but Ellie has a difficult time adjusting to her new life and her grandmother's abrasive personality.
Rationale: Several themes develop in the Inspiration Book and the books selected for the bibliography: Saskatchewan and Canada’s Prairie provinces, farm life, a missing parent, hard-times, and living with grandparents. Several entire Books Alive entries are devoted to the depression, living with grandparents, hard-times, and farm life. As a result, I simply emphasize the Prairie Provinces, especially Saskatchewan, in this QuickPick entry. Use the related books in a simple book sharing, booktalk, or as an introduction to a unit about Canada, especially the Prairie Provinces. Encourage the social studies teacher to bring the class to the library or drag the books to the classroom when the topic is taught. The Crazy Man, listed below, like the Inspiration Book, was a Triple Crown nominee and winner.
If you want to do more than a book talk, the L is for Land of Living Skies offers many ideas to expand on that introductory Saskatchewan title, especially for middle grade students, grades 3-6.
