Animal Slumbers
Inspiration Book:
Sleep like a tiger by Logue, Mary — Houghton Mifflin Books for Children, 2012--E-; Int Lvl: K-3; Rd Lvl: 2.6 At bedtime a young girl asks "Does everything in the world go to sleep?".
Rationale: My Books Alive posts will include other sleep related books: Nighttime Ninja about nighttime adventures; and No Go Sleep about sleep problems.
This My Books Alive post is all about animals and sleep. That means be sure to include it in a unit about animal behavior for young children, or a health unit that emphasizes the necessity for sleep. The Sleep Education for Schools website has some wonderful suggestions for teaching about sleep and some specific resources for learning about animals and sleep. You might want to coordinate this entry with No Go Sleep because both main characters have “going to sleep issues.” Beyond that, they take different directions: one about animals, the other offering suggestions to the young child preparing for sleep.
Grades K-3--Animal Slumbers
Preparation: Computer with Internet access and projection capability. Chart paper or white board to make two column chart: Animal------How it Sleeps
Introduction: Do animals need sleep? Do animals sleep the same way we do? Let’s find out.
Read aloud: Sleep like a tiger by Logue, Mary — Houghton Mifflin Books for Children, 2012--E-; Int Lvl: K-3; Rd Lvl: 2.6 At bedtime a young girl asks "Does everything in the world go to sleep?".
The Inspiration Book is a fiction fantasy story about sleeping. It won a Caldecott Honor Book Award for its illustrations. Illustrator Pamela Zagarenski tells us a little about how she made those illustrations.http://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?tid=33320 You may need to register at TeachingBooks, first.
Sleep Like a Tiger is a made up story that tells some facts as well as a fun story. Our next book is all facts.
Read aloud: Please don't wake the animals : a book about sleep by Batten, Mary - Peachtree, p2008, c2008--591.5--Int Lvl: K-3--Rd Lvl: 2.7. Describes the sleep behaviors of a variety of animals, including mountain gorillas, bats, dolphins, and others.
Video: We can get information from video, too. In the short video we’ll find out whether Horses Sleep Standing Up http://wonderopolis.org/wonder/do-horses-sleep-standing-up/
Let’s make a chart about what we learned. (Ask each student to name an animal and tell how that animal slept. Between the two books, there should be enough animal respresentation for all to offer an idea for the chart.)
Do all animals sleep quietly at night? Let’s read our last book and find out.
Read aloud: A book of sleep by Na, Il Sung - Knopf, p2009, c2009--E--Int Lvl: K-3--Rd Lvl: 1.6. While other animals sleep at night, some quietly and others noisily, some alone and others huddled together, a wide-eyed owl watches.
Which animals weren’t quiet sleepers? Which animals were daytime sleepers? Let’s add them to our chart. I’m going to give each of you a 4 x 6 note card. Write the name of one of the animals from the chart and draw a picture of the animal, then post your card around the chart to remind us about animal slumber.
