Rationale: Everybody loves a hero story and when the hero is an animal, the story is even more amazing. In this Books Alive Quick Pick entry we’ emphasize hero pets, non-trained animal heroes and animals trained to be helpers. Another heroic animal story is Two Bobbies which is also about Hurricane Katrina and is another Books Alive entry. The teacher resources below are excellent starters if you want to develop a complete unit about animal heroes. My schools have not had animal heroes as part of the curriculum, but you could easily develop a mini-unit or a school-wide emphasis from the teacher resources. Small groups of students could develop presentations about one type of animal hero, making use of the other titles in the nonfiction series by Julia Barnes, Robert Grayson, Linda Bozzo, and Claudia Martin.
