Two Bobbies : a true story of Hurricane Katrina, friendship, and survival by Larson, Kirby - Walker, p2008, c2008--636.08--Int Lvl: K-3--Rd Lvl: 4.2Tells the true story of Bobbie the dog and Bob Cat, two pets who bonded together and were able to survive the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Only by sticking together can Bobbi and Bob Cat survive a very frightening time. The kindness of humans enables them to finally be rescued.
Rationale: Hurricanes are another topic of great interest, but a topic that is very scary to children. Knowledge can help take the scariness away. Three different aspects of hurricanes: animal rescues for grades K-3, Hurricane preparedness for grades 3-6, and Hurricane science for grades 5-8 are shared here. The lessons for grades K-3 and 5-8 could easily be incorporated into grades 3-6.
Grades K-3--Not Just the People Need Help
Preparation: Have U.S. map available.
Introduction: (Many of the ideas for this lesson come from http://learningtogive.org What does loyalty mean? In what ways can friends be loyal? Where do we live? Can you show where we live on this map? Find New Orleans on our US map. Notice how close it is to the ocean. A hurricane is a severe storm that comes off the water. Each year, the people who live in the hurricane areas prepare for the storm. The year of the storm in this story, people were told to leave their homes and find shelter far away because Hurricane Katrina was going to be big. People who went to a shelter were not allowed to bring their pets.Look at the cover. What do you think happened in this neighborhood? Do you think anybody lives in these houses? What can you tell about these pets from the picture?

Two Bobbies : a true story of Hurricane Katrina, friendship, and
survival by Larson, Kirby - Walker, p2008, c2008--636.08--Int Lvl: K-3--Rd Lvl: 4.2. Tells the true story of Bobbie the dog and Bob Cat, two pets who bonded together and were able to survive the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
Do you think this is a true story? What clues tell you that? How long ago was 2005?
How did Bobbi help Bob Cat during their adventure? How did Bob Cat help Bobbi? What can we learn about helping others from their story? Let’s look back through the book for any hints in the story or pictures that Bob Cat was blind. Why do you think everyone was surprised when they found out that Bob Cat was blind? Were you surprised?
Bobbie and Bob Cat ended up in a shelter and eventually found a new home. In our next story, a little girl goes to a shelter to find a puppy. This, too, is a true story.

Every year, six million to eight million homeless pets enter shelters. Bobbi and Bob Cat were accepted into the shelter set up by Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Does our community have an animal shelter? More than one? How could we find out? Let’s check the phone directory. Or we could check on the computer.
Why do you think animals end up in shelters? Why is it important to spay and neuter dogs and cats?
If you could adopt any animal into your family, what kind of animal would you choose? Why?
Our last story is a make believe story or a fiction story. It is about a small animal who rescues an animal that is often an enemy.

Before we begin our Internet research, I’m wondering what you know about hurricanes like Hurricane Katrina. What do you think hurricanes are? What do they do? What do you think
they are made of? Where do they come from? What do you think causes the movement of hurricanes? What usually happens when hurricanes develop? Have you ever seen one? Do we have hurricanes in our state?
View video clip What is a Hurricane? at
We’re going to go on an Internet scavenger hunt and learn the answers to those questions. By following the directions and steps very carefully from the Internet link page you should be able to learn a lot about hurricanes. Write your answers on the hand out of the electronic page.
