Rationale: When Jules Verne published his adventure novel Around the World in Eighty Day, adventurers were encouraged to try to do the same. Introduce the inspiration for the Inspiration Book via a read aloud or longish book talk or storytelling, then an introduction of the Inspiration Book’s three adventurers, reporter Nellie Bly, bicyclist Thomas Stevens, and sailor Joshua Slocum. Candlewick Press, the publisher of the Inspiration Book has a fine lesson plan available online.

Our society is also obsessed with firsts. Introduce some of the other firsts around the world by sharing and/or displaying the Related Books. The Matt Phelan interviews about the backstory and visual storytelling are also worth sharing.

A Books Alive entry about Nellie Bly is at Bylines. The lesson theme is newspaper writing and journalism and includes a lesson for each grade level.
