Inspiration Book:
How Rocket learned to read by Hills, Tad  — Schwartz & Wade Books, 2010--E-; Int Lvl: K-3; Rd Lvl: 2.9 A little yellow bird teaches Rocket the dog how to read by first introducing him to the alphabet. FREE Teaching Resources available for download at Follett.com

Rationale: A cult has grown up around Rocket. You will find him represented all over the book world: book stores, catalogs, department stores. He has his own stuffed model. Usually that ubiquity means the book and/or character are very popular. That’s true in this case, but in this case, Rocket is a also a fine emergent reader read and preschooler read aloud. The author and publisher have also done libraries and librarians a service by developing lesson and party plans. They are fun and well worth looking at and picking and choosing what you might like to use. I don’t usually like commercial marketed books, but I tolerate this one because Rocket is cute, but more so because many of the books are about literacy--alphabet, vocabulary, writing, reading, and books.

Rocket is a great preschool and kindergarten read, a beginning of school story hour, and could be the mascot for the primary grades. Enjoy using some of the resources listed below as well as supplementing the activities you develop and use with books from the Related Books list. Six Rocket books are represented in the Related Books list, including the newest 2018 title, Rocket the Brave.

Related Books Alive entries about books, libraries, reading, and librarians may also be found at these locations: Biblioburro, That Book Woman and Miss Dorothy and her Bookmobile are all part of one entry under Biblioburro and called Librarian Power.  Miss Brooks Loves Books has its own entry and is titled For the Love of Books.
