Inspiration Book:
Miss Brooks loves books! (and I don't) by Bottner, Barbara — Alfred A. Knopf, 2010--E-; Int Lvl: K-3; Rd Lvl: 2.4 A first-grade girl--who does not like to read--stubbornly resists her school librarian's efforts to convince her to love books until she finds one that might change her mind.
Rationale: At the beginning of each new school year, I love to share books about books and librarians and reading. This one is perfect. In the primary grades we spend almost the entire first month on those topics, one week at a time as we also learn library manners, expectations, rules and book care. By being creative, those topics can be intertwined with fun stories. As a result, I collect, well, select books for the collection that fit my needs for the first weeks. The Related Books list is a short list of the kids’ favorites that have stood their scrutiny over the years and have helped them learn to love books just like Missy in the Inspiration Book plus a few newer titles. Many of them are also tributes to librarians and teachers who have helped create a love of reading. Shrek, the book that turned Missy on is also on the list as is the companion book Miss Brooks’ Story Nook.
How Rocket Learned to Read is a Books Alive entry, too. Look for other Books Alive entries, both Quick Picks and complete lessons about books and reading and writing, including A Book, Word After Word After Word, and Plot Chickens. An entry featuring mobile librarians is entered under Biblioburro and also includes That Book Woman and Miss Dorothy and her Bookmobile and emphasizes Librarian Power.
Teacher Resources:
See LibrarySparks, October 2014 pp.35-37 “Library Lessons” Lesson I-- A Just-Right Book; Lesson II--Rhyme Time Riddles (online resource, too); Lesson III--Graphing in the Library (online resource, too). LibrarySparks has now gone out of print, but I found the periodical so useful that I saved all of the issues for reference. If you did, too, these lessons fit the topic well.
