Marilyn Singer, Poet for a Year
Mirror mirror : a book of reversible verse by Singer, Marilyn — Dutton Children's Books, 2010--811; Int Lvl: 3-6; Rd Lvl: 4.1 A collection of short poems which, when reversed, provide new perspectives on the fairy tale characters they feature. This is a very detailed Teaching Resource that examines almost every poem in the collection, and often includes technology extensions suitable for Grades 4+ FREE Teaching Resources available for download at Follett.com
Rationale: By now you know my philosophy of teaching poetry to children. Enjoy it! Don’t dissect it! Don’t drown the kids with a whole month of poetry, but casually and comfortably read, act, and discuss poetry wherever and whenever it fits into your day. Carolyn Feller Bauer had a catchy and clever plan--whenever she found a poem she really liked or one that fit the day or one that fit a subject, she’d pop into a classroom declaring, “Poetry Break.” I like that approach, too.
Reverso Poetry is especially appropriate for telling two sides of one story. When you read a reverso down, it is one poem. When you read it up, with changes allowed only in punctuation and capitalization it is a different poem. These two collections by Marilyn Singer are examples of reverso poetry.
Follett posts teacher resources for some of their best selling titles. Mirror Mirror is one of those titles. Combine this with Singer’s newest book of reverso poems: Follow Follow. The Teacher Guide for Mirror, Mirror, for me, is too intense for 3rd and 4th grade students. It’s a two week study of individual poems examined in an appropriate and interesting variety of approaches including technology integration. However, who in 3rd or 4th grade, the targeted audience, wants to analyze a poem a day for two weeks? Surely, there are more types of poems than reverso poems which are difficult and tricky to read and write for that grade grouping.
So, how would I use these intriguing collections of poetry? Since both titles are about characters in literature in poetry form, I’d insert them into a study of folk and fairy tales as another way to tell the tale. Singer has also written poems about wild animals and pets and nature. Include her poems when a class is studying those topics, too. I’d use the technique of a reverso poem when studying formulaic poetry in middle school. I’d take a “Poetry Break” and wander into a classroom with a poster of the reverso poem and the teaching idea for that poem from the Follett guide.
I’d introduce Marilyn Singer as a significant contemporary poet for children, one that all children should know. Begin a Poet Laureate program at your school, emphasizing the work of one poet such as Singer. Select a different poet each year. Read the poems over the PA, post poems on the walls, make the cover of one of the poetry books the screen for computers in the lab, video students reading the poems, learn about the biography of the poet, write a few poems, create a display, create and distribute a bookmark, use a few of the activities in the teacher guides, etc.
